How Breathing Exercises Benefit Our Mental Health

In this fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become common phenomena for most of us. Amidst the chaotic situations, having a moment to take a deep breath can have a profound effect on our mental health. Breathing exercise, which is often overlooked, is a simple yet powerful tool to enhance our well-being. Below are some of the various ways these exercises can benefit our mental health.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

One of the most immediate benefits of breathing exercises is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Our breathing tends to become shallow and rapid when we’re stressed which can exacerbate feelings of tension and panic. By trying to take deep breaths slowly, we activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system. This “rest and digest” response counteracts the “fight or flight” reaction, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.
To achieve this is through diaphragmatic breathing where we sit or lie down in a comfortable position, placing one hand on our chest and the other on the abdomen then we inhale deeply through our nose making sure that the abdomen rises more than our chest. Lastly, we slowly exhale through our mouths. Repeat this for several minutes and we will feel a calming effect.

Improves Focus and Concentration

Our minds often race, making it difficult to concentrate on tasks at hand but with controlled breathing it can significantly enhance our focus and concentration. This can help us to quiet our mind, reducing distractions and improving mental clarity which can be beneficial particularly during work or study sessions.
Box breathing is an effective technique for this which can be done by inhaling through our nose for a count of four, holding our breath for a count of four, exhaling through our mouth for a count of four, and then holding our breath again for a count of four. We can maintain a steady focus by repeating this cycle.

Enhances Emotional Regulation

Our emotions are closely linked to our breath, but how? A rapid, shallow breathing is often associated with feelings of fear or anger, while a slow, deep breathing can induce feelings of calm and contentment. We can definitely gain better control over our emotions by practicing breathing exercises particularly in situations where we feel overwhelmed or upset.
Alternate nostril breathing can be practiced for emotional regulation. All we have to do is to sit comfortably, close our right nostril with our thumb, inhale deeply through our left nostril, then close our left nostril with our right finger, open our right nostril, and exhale fully. A balanced state of mind will be achieved by repeating this cycle.

Promotes Better Sleep

Poor sleep is often a consequence of stress and anxiety but breathing exercises can help prepare our mind and body to have a restful sleep by promoting relaxation. Engaging in a simple breathing routine before bed can signal our body that it’s time to unwind, leading to better sleep quality.
The 4-7-8 technique is a helpful exercise for this. We just have to inhale quietly through our nose for a count of four, hold our breath for a count of seven, and exhale completely through our mouth for a count of eight. It would drift off us to sleep more easily by repeating this cycle.

Boosts Overall Well-being

Breathing exercises can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of burnout, and even improve digestion. We can experience a holistic improvement in both our physical and mental health if we integrate these exercises into our daily routine. Even a few minutes of mindful breathing can be very transformative.

At the end of the day, breathing is an automatic process that we often take for granted. However, the way we breathe can influence our physiological and psychological state. Embracing the power of our breath can be life-changing. And as we navigate the complexities of modern life, let us remember that a profound source of calm and strength lies within us, waiting to be harnessed with each mindful inhale and exhale. Start today, and experience the transformative power of conscious breathing. The journey to a healthier, happier you begins with a single breath.
